November 15 is the 320th day of the year, and the American record for it runs from 1777 to 1988 — a span of 211 years. The entry that anchors it: American Civil War, 1864.

In the years around independence, the date turns political. In 1777, American Revolutionary War — after 16 months of debate the Continental Congress approves the Articles of Confederation.

By the middle of the nineteenth century the date carries heavier freight. In 1864, American Civil War — Union army general William Tecumseh Sherman began his March to the Sea, inflicting significant damage to property and infrastructure using scorched-earth tactics on his way from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia.

In the first half of the twentieth century the date turns technological.
